The Department of Agriculture in partnership with the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO) under Dr. Silardo Bested conducted a training on rabbit meat production and product development” recently to promote food security in highly-urbanized cities.

Samantha Licudine, CVAO veterinarian I, said 20 farmers from the municipalities of Tuba and La Trinidad, Benguet and beneficiaries from Baguio City under the DA’s National Urban and Peri-urban Program Rabbit Livelihood Project participated in the three-day activity. 

Earlier, the city government led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong encouraged rabbit raising as an alternative means of meat production.

Training participants were given a brief know-how by experts on proper rabbit raising and had a hands-on activity where they showed their newly-acquired knowledge in the humane handling and dressing of rabbits, Licudine said.

She added a preview on the available machines at the CVAO’s meat processing facility that can be used to add value to rabbit meat was done, including sharing various strategies and tips that could help rabbit raisers flourish in the industry. – Gaby B. Keith
