The city council urged concerned sectors of the city to report on their findings, observations, and recommendations on the request of Mayor Benjamin Magalong to extend the closure of the ascending portion of Session Road.
Representatives of the Baguio City Police Office, business groups, transport associations, among others, are expected to appear during the council’s regular session, January 20 to give their inputs on the proposed continued closure of Session Road every Sunday as part of the efforts of the city government to pedestrianize the thoroughfare.
Earlier, Magalong requested the city council to extend the closure reportedly based on positive feedback.
The closure was from September to December last year.
The council wants to listen to the plight of the directly and indirectly affected sectors, especially their findings, observations, and recommendations before approving or denying the request of the mayor.
Some of the affected sectors, particularly the transport sector, asked the city council not to extend the closure traffic build-up at other roads in the city.
Some sectors also asked to stop the chalk art because chalk dust also pollutes waterways – a contradiction of the closure’s intent, which is to reduce pollution.
Positive feedbacks include the fact that people can walk freely on the city’s main road; people enjoy various activities conducted every Sunday and that there is an added area in the central business district where family members can bond by walking on the closed portion of the road. – PIO release
