BONTOC, Mountain Province – Residents of Barangay Tocucan here can now transport  their agricultural products and basic commodities easier and safer with the completion of a government project under the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The 1.2-million project titled “Improvement of footpath at Sitio Upper Chenglis and Libchan, Tocucan” was funded through the DSWD’s Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services-Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan Indigenous Peoples Community-Driven Development Community Sub-Project Cycle 1.

This was finally completed and turned over on Jan. 30.

According to Punong Barangay Mariano Wayyas, the project is beneficial because the path leads to the rice fields and the main barangay and it used to be unsafe and difficult to traverse.

With the government’s aim to empower communities especially the indigenous groups to be involved in nation building, the project was accomplished through strong collaboration among the residents.

Wayyas shared that women volunteers helped to finish the path.

“Adda ti bulontaryo nga nagtrabaho, babaket da pay, ket inan anusan da nga nagtrabaho enggana nalpas ket napintas met ti trabaho da. Adda met ladta jay labor da. Dagiyay da met snacks, nu maibatog ti maysa nga balay, agpasnack da met,” he said.

Wayyas expressed gratitude for the project and assured that the community will be responsible for its maintenance.

Agpasalamat kami ti gobyerno ta adda proyekto nga naited kanyami nga pasyaatan ti umili. Ket  dakami nga umili bilang beneficiaries, alwadan mi ken mentinaren mi, anya man nga dadael na, irepair mi ladta ken kanayaon mi nga dalusan tapno mayat ti mausaran na,” he said. – Clienteast Van B. Totanes
