This near-sighted Ibaloy writer loves good news. Here’s one: The Summer Capital’s total crime volume decreased by 38 percent from January to November this year or 1,184 less incidents compared with the 3,119 reported in the same period in 2018.
Baguio City Police Office Director, Col. Allen Rae Co, reported the crime volume at City Hall before officials and guests led by Mayor Benjamin Magalong and Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan.
Co attributed the significant decrease in crime incidents to the implementation of the BCPO’s various anti-criminality plans and programs like the detailed patrol plan.
He added that vehicular traffic incidents decreased to 815 from last year’s 1,887 or a 57 percent decrease due to community cooperation, traffic scheme, safety protocols, and other measures implemented.
Co said the BCPO also conducts massive checkpoint operations to seal ingress and egress to and from the city; deployment of special tourist police; use of the Cobra Eyes Command Center where prompt response is achieved, operationalization of specialized teams to respond to specific situations monitored by tactical operations center and calls received for police assistance.
The BCPO also arrested 829 fugitives from January to November and accounted 38 firearms.

Here’s “Don’t Go Far Off” by Pablo Neruda: “Don’t go far off, not even for a day, because –/because — I don’t know how to say it: a day is long/ and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station/when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep./Don’t leave me, even for an hour, because/then the little drops of anguish will all run together,/ the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift/into me, choking my lost heart./ Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;/ may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance./ Don’t leave me for a second, my dearest,/ because in that moment you’ll have gone so far/ I’ll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,/ Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?”
