In honor of the contribution of athletes and sports movers in the Cordillera, the inaugural Benguet CARES (Cordillera Athletic Recognition for Excellence in Sports Awards) program is set on April 22 at Newtown Plaza Hotel, Baguio City.
The program, initiated by the provincial government, will honor 12 individuals for its major awards and give citations to 24 athletes in 12 different sport disciplines.
Provincial Sports Development Coordinator Dean Mark Monang said the major awards  include the Athlete of the Year, Hall of Fame, Lifetime Achievement Award, Sportsman of the Year, Coach of the Year, Executive of the Year, Young Sports Achiever of the Year, and four posthumous awards.
Monang said the program aims to recognize and reward outstanding sporting achievement of homegrown talents who brought pride and honor for Benguet. It will also encourage and motivate athletes to become better in their field of sport and as an individual.
“We decided to include athletes in the whole Cordillera since a lot of our athletes are not necessarily from Benguet but have already made the province their home and represent it in various competitions,” Monang said.
The Benguet CARES awards program is backed by Rep. Eric Yap, Gov. Melchor Diclas, and Board Members Jeston Balong-angey, Neptali Camsol, Robert Namoro, Melchor Guessey, Ruben Paoad, and Jim Botiwey.
