The city council through Resolution 151, s. 2022 expresses gratitude and acceptance of the City of San Antonio, Texas of the United States of America’s offer for sisterhood/twinning relationship with Baguio.
San Antonio City Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in his letter on Nov. 30, 2021 that his town’s keen interest for partnership ties was in collaboration with the Filipino-American community for endeavors that are mutually beneficial to both, particularly in the areas of trade and commerce, education, health care, socio-cultural activities, and military and emergency management.
The offer was initially accepted by the Philippine International Sisterhood and Twinning Association Baguio City chapter chaired by Mayor Benjamin Magalong.
Ordinance 42, s. 2008, or the city’s “Sisterhood and Twinning Ordinance,” opens alliances with other cities of like qualities for the purpose of fostering long-term mutual partnerships that assist communities gain a national and global perspective to the challenges they face through cultural, educational, business/trade and humanitarian assistance exchanges.
Among the prime considerations of the sisterhood ties are cultural awareness and sensitivities and the development of national and international trade and tourism.
San Antonio City, Texas is seventh most populated city in America, second largest city in the southern U.S., and the second-most populous city in Texas.
It is the first chartered civil settlement and the oldest municipality in Texas having celebrated its 300th anniversary on May 1, 2018.
The city is rich in Spanish colonial historical sites and offers enjoyment of its mild winters and hot summers to visitors. Flourishing shops of fashionable and stylish clothing and awesome spots like the Alamo, Sea World, and the San Antonio Botanical Garden further made the place a popular destination. The city is also known for its barbecue and tacos and its bustling business district.
It is home to five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest events in the U.S.
The San Antonio city council, the city’s legislative body, consists of 10 members elected from single-member districts.
The elected mayor presides the city council, while a city manager or administrator is appointed by the governing body serves as its main executive.
Through a resolution, the council authorized the mayor to sign a memorandum of agreement with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for the implementation of the conservation plan for the Dominican Hill Retreat House in the amount of P15 million.
The project was crafted as result of the continuous coordination of the city with the NCCA in line with the preservation of cultural heritage sites.
It was adopted by NCCA for its own purposes with appropriate funding from its F101 locally funded project in recognition of the city’s desire to contribute in the development of Philippine culture and arts.
In Resolution 148, s. 2022, the council commended the University of Baguio for ranking first among the top performing schools garnering 82.18 percent overall passing rate in the March 2022 Medical Technologist licensure examination.
There were 1,268 passers out of 2,752 examinees.
UB ranked number one as per Professional Regulations Commission Resolution 2017-1058(C), s. 2017, which includes and qualifies as top performing schools those schools with 80 or more examinees and with at least 80 percent passing percentage such as UB with 83 passers out of 101 examinees.
The Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (Kalipi)-Baguio was allowed through Resolution 150, s. 2022 to use Igorot Park from April 11 to 17 to promote their livelihood activities to recover from the losses incurred during their participation in Obra ti Babai Women’s Livelihood Fair.
The resolution stated that Kalipi-Baguio had participated in the “Obra ti Babai Women’s Livelihood Fair” as part of Women’s Month Celebration at the Igorot Park last March 21 to 27 but was not able to realize its expected revenue/sales due to the low turnout of buyers because the activity coincided with the Session Road in Bloom which attracted more customers and the rains which occurred.
Kalipi participants are micro entrepreneurs who do not have much capital or are just starting from the impact of the pandemic. They rely on whatever sales generated from the previous fair to be able to sustain their livelihood activity.
