PIDIGAN, Abra – The Department of Trade and Industry-Abra conducted a seminar on products standards conformance for business owners and other stakeholders here amid the growing concern on counterfeit construction products and materials.
DTI Provincial Director Samuel Gallardo said it is important for hardware stores and construction firm owners, local government units and national government agencies, and the consumers to know or be familiar with the Philippine National Standards (PNS)-certified and quality construction products as counterfeit materials are becoming rampant.
“One of the mandates of our office is to safeguard our consumers and business owners from sub-standard construction materials to make sure that our structures are sound,” Gallardo said.
DTI invited experts and consultants from industry associations to discuss the specifications of construction materials that conform with PNS quality standards.
Among the topics they discussed were PNS requirements including the manufacturing process, safety, and quality tests and mandatory markings of different construction materials.
The experts also advised consumers to familiarize themselves with the brand marks or emblems, manufacturing company, product types, and quality marks to ensure that the construction materials they are buying are within the standards.
Gallardo said their office will continue to conduct monitoring and inspection operations to ensure that no substandard materials are sold in the province. – Christian Tubadeza
