The Wastewater and Hazardous Waste Management Division of the City Environment and Parks Management Office oriented barangay officials on laws about hazardous wastes.
Those who attended the seminar are barangay officials of BGH Compound, Brookside, Holyghost Extension, Imelda Marcos, Lopez Jaena, Magsaysay-Private Road, Lower Magsaysay, Marcoville, Pacdal, Padre Zamora, Phil-am Compound, Pinget, Lower Quirino Hill, Middle Quirino Hill, East Quirino Hill, Salud Mitra, San Antonio Village, South Sanitary Camp, Sto. Nino-Slaughterhouse Compound, and South Drive.
Pollution Control Officer III Joseph Willy briefed the participants on the types of plastics, their properties and uses, benefits and limitations, and their environmental impacts.
Willy also presented the characteristics, classifications, and sources of hazardous waste, common household hazardous waste, their health and environmental impacts, and related policies such Republic Act 6969 or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act.
Salient features and proposed amendments on Ordinance 35, s. 2017 or Regulating the Sale, Distribution, and Use of Plastic/Carrying Bags and Styrofoam in the City of Baguio and Executive Order 156, s. 2020 entitled Reconstituting the Plastic and Styrofoam Free Baguio Task Force were introduced.
Environmental Management Division Officer-in-Charge Sofronio Pascua presented provisions of the Water Code and Presidential Decree 296 that directs all persons, natural or juridical, to renounce possession and move out of portions or rivers, creeks, esteros, drainage channels, and other waterways.
The participants were also oriented on PD 825 or Garbage Disposal Law; RA 9275 or Philippine Clean Water Act; Ordinance 59, s. 2020 that incorporated inland waterway provisions; Ordinance 18, s. 2016 or the Environment Code of the City of Baguio; and Administrative Order 43, s. 2018 that created an Inter-agency Task Force on Piggeries in the City of Baguio.
Pascua also presented the sources of water pollution and actions undertaken in reducing the pollution. – Wilbur S. Suanding
