A database for Baguio City athletes will soon be established as the implementing rules and regulations of the sports code is being finalized.

Sangguniang Kabataan Federation chair and Councilor Levy Lloyd Orcales said the IRR of the city sports code will go through deliberation in the committee level of the city council on June 11, as the city is bent on recognizing winning athletes and coaches.

In the IRR, the City Sports Development Office will create a database identifying athletes and other sports stakeholders and how it can respond to their needs.

The city will conduct a tryout phase where athletes can participate and those who qualify will be chosen as city-recognized athletes, allowing the city to provide them further training, financial support, and logistics for events outside of the city.

Only those registered will be allowed to represent the city in any sports event and are eligible for incentives and other forms of assistance from the city.

“The sports code can lead to the creation and promotion of more equitable opportunities for sports for all,” Orcales said.

The sports code will not only benefit athletes but also other sectors including women, children, out of school youth, persons with disability, and elderlies.

Approved early this year, the sports code will form a sports council that will serve as a recommending body of the city on matters concerning sports and recreation.

The code also aims to address concerns in marketing, promotions, sports tourism, media, athletes with disability, sports medicine, sports infrastructure and facilities, and barangay sports, among others. – Ofelia C. Empian
