TUBLAY, Benguet – The Department of Education Schools Division Office of Benguet unveiled projects aimed to develop and hone the reading skills of the learners by engaging them in continuous reading activities.

Launched at the Paoad Elementary School here on July 20 are Project Bindiyan Vacation Reading Camp and Brighter Program, with the theme “I-Benguet Learners Going Brighter through Project Bindiyan Reading Camp.”

Bindiyan is an acronym for Batang IBenguet, Nakababasa, Diwang Isinatitik at Yamang Angkin, Naisasabuhay while Brighter stands for Beginning Reading Interventions through Gratifying and Honing Techniques for Enhanced Reading.

“Reading is a key to our future that needs to be developed among our learners with passion and dedication,” Paoad ES Principal Nora Suaking said as she stressed reading is a skill that can be developed over time.

Education Program Supervisor in Filipino Norbert Lartec said based on their data, numerous learners in the province have difficulty in reading.
“Many of our learners are still struggling when it comes to reading. Lalo na doon sa K to 3 na nandoon sa frustration level. Ibig sabihin, kailangan nila ang pag-agapay, kailangan nila ang paggabay upang sila ay magabayan lalung-lalo na kapag sila ay tutuntong sa mas mataas na lebel ng pag-aaral”, Lartec said.

With the introduction of the two projects, Lartec said learners will be guided in reading comprehension and writing as well, namely Readathon, Read to Write, DEAR Project, and Project Carousel, among others.

During the launching, Mayor Armando Lauro led the story reading to some learners as he emphasized the resiliency of concerned stakeholders especially in sustaining the continuity of education. – Debbie E. Gasingan
