BANGUED, Abra – Three associations in conflict-cleared barangays in the province are set to boost their capability in blacksmithing with the equipment provided by the Department of Science and Technology.
The Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) in Abra equipped the Buneg, Sap-al, Talipugo, Bantugo Farmers Association in Lacub; Alangtin Intipon Farmers Association, Inc. in Barangay Alangtin in Tubo, and Malibcong Rebel Returnees Association in Buanao, Malibcong with blacksmith accessories and equipment.
The fabrication of common farm tools and equipment project costs P1.777 million, including trainings and other needs.
The project is under the Department of Science and Technology’s Local Grants-in-Aid program which aims to harness the country’s scientific and technological capabilities to spur and attain sustainable economic growth and development.
PSTC Head Ralf Sapi-il said the experts from DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center will be tapped to handle training in the operation of the machines and the metalworking-related needs of the associations.
PSTC-Abra also plans to partner with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for further implementation of the project.
Blacksmithing in the rural areas is usually done the traditional way, but with the equipment and trainings, the members of the three beneficiary association are expected to improve the quality of their products and increase their productivity. – Susan C. Aro
