The city government is inviting the public to join an ecological waste management and sustainability fair on March 17 at Session Road.

The fair aims to showcase eco-friendly products, projects, and advocaciesin celebration of the Women’s Month with the theme “Kababaihan para sa Kalikasan”.

City Environment and Parks Management Office Deputy Head Engr. Marivic Empiso said the activity will serve as a venue to showcase up-cycled and recycled products and items anyone can purchase, as well the conduct of an information and education and advocacy campaign on proper waste management.

There will be exchange of household or donated items where residents can bring things they no longer use instead of throwing it. These items will be received and displayed in booths to be set up at the area.

“They can bring things that they no longer use but can still be used by others who need these items. Passersby or those visiting the area may get items they need or can reuse,” Empiso said.

A booth for electronic materials or wastes will also be provided, which is in compliance with the Hazardous Waste Management Act.

Empiso explained electronic wastes contain chemicals which when mixed with common solid wastes may contaminate land and water resources, reason why these materials should have proper disposal and treatment method.

She said collected e-wastes will be brought to the city’s material recovery facility at Bakakeng Central barangay and will be disassembled by trained operators to separate plastics, metals, and its hazardous waste components.

The hazardous items will be transported to facilities accredited by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in compliance with regulations for proper disposal.

There will also be a book exchange where residents can bring books and exchange them with those to be brought by other participants, or they may also donate them for others’ use.

There will also a refilling station and a composting booth.

Startup projects will also be featured as an innovation and promotion of technologies related to waste and sustainability management.

Locally made healthypre-packed foods will be available for sale, as well as chalk art contest in partnership with the city’s Sangguniang Kabataan Federation.

A zumba for physical fitness enthusiasts and busking will also be held at the venue.

The event will open with a program at Malcolm Square at 8 a.m. with Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Councilor Lourdes Tabanda, Zero Waste Baguio, and Environment Management Bureau.

The Bureau of Fire Protection will also lead games to promote fire safety and awareness.

The event happening along the whole stretch of Session Road will be held until 5 p.m. – Hanna C. Lacsamana
