The children’s playground at Burnham Park will reopen on March 27, coinciding with the possible resumption of face-to-face classes in Baguio.
This was the response of Mayor Benjamin Magalong to the resolution of the Baguio City Council requesting the executive department to reopen the children’s playground.
In his letter, Magalong said there are ongoing developments at the children’s park such as the repair of damaged and dilapidated play facilities, installation of signage and informational guides, and improvement in landscaping.
The mayor said the City Environment and Parks Management Office hopes to finish these by March 27.
The playground has been closed since 2020.
According to Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, author of the resolution, the children’s playground is a place for people, young and old alike, to relax and enjoy nature, and engage in physical and social activities. It is also where children express themselves in an environment that freely allows physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development.
She said all these experiences were denied the children when the area was closed.
She said the low Covid-19 infection rate of the city and the high vaccination rate program warrants the opening of the playground. – Jordan G. Habbiling
