The much-awaited title defense of undefeated Ifugao boxer Carl Jammes Martin against challenger Renoel Pael in Mandaluyong City on Feb. 22 has been postponed due to the threats of the Coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19).
The 20-year-old Martin has asked boxing fans that his title defense for the Philippine Boxing Federation bantamweight belt will be announced if given clearance by concerned agencies led by the Department of Health.
“Our showdown with Ronoel Panel has been postponed because of the new coronavirus outbreak,” Martin said in a Facebook post last week.
Martin’s camp has been training hard since the start of the year knowing that Pael is a formidable opponent who holds 23 wins with 11 losses and one draw under his belt.
Martin, on the other hand, has an unblemished 15-win record, 14 by way of knockout, including his recent bout against Philip Luis Cuerdo in December last year.
Martin won the vacant PBF bantamweight title against Benezer Alolod also through knockout on the seventh round of their fight in Mandaluyong City last year.
Pael’s record also boasts of out of the country fights mostly in Japan and Australia, unlike Martin who is yet to step out of the motherland for his bouts, facing all his foreign opponents in the country. – Harley F. Palangchao
