Mayor Benjamin Magalong has directed Health Services Office-Sanitation Division head Robert Colewan to craft a set of standards on what a public comfort room in the city should be befitting its status as a tourist destination.

This will be presented and discussed during the regular management committee meeting on April 23 at the City Hall multipurpose hall.

“Standards are needed to be followed for our public CRs, used by visitors and residents, to ensure that these are clean and sanitary,” the mayor said.

In a meeting on March 11 with Colewan, Permits and Licensing Division chief Allan Abayao and a representative of the City Environment and Parks Management Office, the mayor informed them that the toilets of several restaurants and other establishments that he has gone to were unsanitary.

“Nakakahiya na, ang dumi-dumi ng CR nila. It’s about time siguro na maging mahigpit na tayo tungkol dito,” the mayor said as he lamented that some of the toilets don’t even have water, soap and other sanitation paraphernalia.

The mayor said while Baguio prides itself as a tourist area, many of its toilets are unsanitary.

Those in charge of the toilets at City Hall have also been reminded to regularly clean the facilities and make sure that these have water, soap and other necessities, he said.

He added public toilets that are in the bidding process for construction or rehabilitation will be similar to the model CRs located at Botanical Garden and Wright Park. – Gaby B. Keith
