Team Lakay’s Jenelyn Olsim has earned yet another tough win against a former Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter in Bi Nguyen in the undercard of ONE: Battleground III in Singapore on Aug. 27.
The non-rated ONE Championship fighter Olsim has convinced the judges in her favor for a unanimous decision win against the ranked top five atomweight contender.
The 24-year-old Olsim of Bokod, Benguet and Baguio City was successful in fending off the submission attempts by the Vietnamese-American fighter. The Filipino fighter, instead, almost went for a submission via potential armbar or an omoplata, which later transitioned to a gogoplata attempt.
But Nguyen was lucky to have escaped the submission attempts from the Team Lakay fighter, who she earlier claimed lacks ground game.
In between rounds, Olsim capitalized on her striking, landing shots to keep Nguyen at bay. The Bokod native also used her reach advantage to frustrate Nguyen.
Olsim delivered the most significant punch in the second round courtesy of a beautiful straight right that floored Nguyen. She then followed up with elbows to body punches while both fighters are on the ground.
Sensing Olsim is ahead in the scorecard, Nguyen was apparently looking for the opportunity for a knockout but to no avail, as the Filipino fighter was successful in fending off the attacks.
With the clock ticking, Nguyen has executed a hip toss before she went for a mount and landed some clean shots on Olsim.
Nguyen’s last flurry however was not enough to convince the three judges to give the fight in her favor, as Olsim earned her back-to-back wins in the home of martial arts with her superior grappling and near-submissions.
Olsim improved her professional mixed martial arts record to five wins against three losses while Nguyen dropped to six wins and seven losses. – Harley F. Palangchao
