AGUINALDO, Ifugao – Residents and other stakeholders joined forces for a cleanup drive at the Magat Dam along Barangay Halag in this town on Dec. 10 and 11 to clear debris swept from upstream during the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses.

Personnel from the municipal and barangay local government units, municipal police station, Ifugao Provincial Mobile Force Company, Bureau of Fire Protection, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, National Irrigation Administration, and  National Power Corporation joined residents of Halag in the Magat clearing operation.

Boats given by the BFAR for the fisherfolks were mobilized for the cleanup.

It was reported that during the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses on Nov. 12, sudden rush of debris covered an estimated 50 hectares of the Magat Reservoir located in Halag. The debris consisted of logs, plastic bottles, cellophanes, driftwoods, and other wastes.

The cleanup drive was agreed upon by the various stakeholders in the Dec. 3 meeting convened by Mayor Gaspar Chilagan, Jr. as part of the efforts to protect the environment. – Daniel B. Codamon
