Highland Boxing Gym’s top honcho Brico Santig is the top Filipino boxing promoter for 2020 having staged four promotions in the Philippines and Thailand.
The multi-awarded Filipino promoter first promoted a boxing event in Bangkok, Thailand in January that featured Filipino boxer Jomar “Wallopman” Fajardo of Iloilo, who stopped Narin Tuekpho of Thailand via second-round technical knockout.
Fajardo improved his record to 17 wins with eight knockouts and 18 losses.
Santig, together with Liu Gang of Max Power Promotions and Darwin Miller Depay of DMAD Boxing Promotion, also mounted a four-championship boxing promotion with 15 bouts at the Manila Arena.
In that event, Eric Pen of Cambodia improved to six wins against zero loss when he retired Alexander Bajawa of Indonesia in the second round to win the World Boxing Association Asia heavyweight title.
Dinh Hoang Truong of Vietnam knocked out Yuttana Wongda of Thailand also in the second round to capture the World Boxing Council Asia super middleweight title, while General Santos’ own Mark Sales, who has 24 wins, 43 losses, and five draws, scored a unanimous decision over Prabhjot Singh of Bulacan to win the Asian Boxing Federation middleweight title.
In March, Santig, together with co-promoter Liu Gang, also oversaw the boxing promotion held at Suamlum Night Bazaar in Ratchadaphisek, Bangkok that featured Fajardo again against Wulan Tuolehazi of China.
Wulan stopped Fajardo via six-round TKO.
In the same month, Santig and Liu co-promoted again this time at Highland Boxing Udom Suksa School in Bangkok.
The main event featured Kanyanat Chotchun of Thailand, who won by a TKO in the fourth round over Arada Boonmami.
Santig also had worked as a matchmaker of promoter Amir Khan for Oct. 3 that featured Usman Wazeer of Pakistan against Boido Simanjuntak of Indonesia for the vacant Asian Boxing Federation welterweight title. Wazeer TKO’d Simanjuntak in the fifth round.
The 44-year-old Santig went back to Manila to set another promotion but was hit by the pandemic.
Last year, Santig received the Southeast Asia Promoter of the Year 2019 award from the Asian Boxing Council, an affiliate of the World Boxing Council. – Harley F. Palangchao
