Baguio mixed martial arts pride Mark Striegl will be back to action when he clashes with American veteran fighter Chas Skelly in the undercard of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night in Las Vegas, Nevada on Feb. 20.
Striegl, who snatched gold in sambo in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, hopes to make his presence felt in the UFC after his promotion debut loss to Said Nurmagomedov of Russia in October 2020.
Striegl is currently in Arizona, United States where he holds training at George Castro’s MMA Lab ahead of the fight night. He said he is excited to nail his first UFC win to start the year.
The 33-year-old Striegl is an underdog coming into the fight, as the 36-year-old Skelly is a UFC veteran, who made his debut in the world’s biggest MMA promotion in April 2014. The American fighter has nailed seven wins, three losses, and one no-contest in the UFC.
Striegl and Skelly flaunt an identical MMA record of 18 wins and three losses.
Earlier, Striegl, who is known for his world-class grappling, claimed he is training with Bryce Meredith, who is a four-time U.S. NCAA All-American champion in wrestling.
The Baguio-based fighter, who was born to an American-German father and a Filipino mother, holds a record of 14 wins by submission via rear-choke and arm lock.
Skelly is also known as a submission artist with a knockout power. – Harley F. Palangchao
