Eight out of the 16-woman team members of the Banko Perlas Spikers are under isolation after contracting the Covid-19 during their training in Baguio City.
The athletes are training at Saint Vincent Gym in preparation for the July 12 opening of the Philippine Volleyball League in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
Perlas spokesperson AJ Perartilla has clarified they are professional volleyball athletes, not national athletes under the watch of the Philippine Sports Commission as earlier reported.
“It is unfortunate that this happened but we followed and still are following the health protocols set by the city and the Games and Amusement Board,” Perartilla said.
She said the players have no symptoms while five of them are under observation for possible onset of symptoms.
Perartilla said none of the athletes go out of the training bubble for a city tour since they train twice a day.
Earlier, City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said members of the Perlas Spikers were among the three new cluster of Covid-19 surges that include 98 police trainees and 50 employees of a business processing outsourcing firm inside Camp John Hay. – Ofelia C. Empian
