Team events of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Meet 2023 will be fielded soon after it was postponed by the Department of Education due to Typhoon Betty.

Some delegations were on their way to the host provinces when the DepEd issued the suspension order to ensure the safety and security of the athletes and coaching staff.

Apayao will host basketball and volleyball for elementary and secondary while other select team sports will be held in Baguio City, Tabuk City, Mountain Pro-vince, and Benguet.

During the meeting of the Caraa technical working group attended by Schools Division Office (SDO) sports coordinators and regional officials, it was proposed that team events, racket sports, and combative events that were not conducted during the meet, will be held on a later date.

Apayao took the opportunity to bid for the hosting of basketball and volleyball tournaments.

Basketball and volleyball are the most anticipated events in every Caraa meet. Apayao sports coordinator Marlon Trumpo said hosting the two events will be an opportunity for the province to attract a huge crowd apart from the official delegation of every SDO. He said this will provide a significant economic boost to the province.

Simultaneous with the basketball and volleyball games, Apayao will also host the first Gov. Elias C. Bulut, Jr. Cup for Regional Taekwondo Championship.

The event will highlight the pro-vince’s commitment to promoting martial arts and supporting young athletes who aspire to excel in this sport.

The tournament is expected to attract more than 500 participants including some of the northern region’s best martial artists who will compete in various weight categories. – JC Marquez
