Baguio will celebrate Marriage Week Feb. 7 to 14 with various activities revolving around the theme, “Celebrating commitment through the years.”
The celebration is spearheaded by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
Among the initiatives include the hanging of posters and streamers depicting a seven-day challenge to strengthen the marriage bonds of couples; zumba for couples at the City Hall grounds, Feb. 7; and renewal of vows of 100 couples at the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office hall, Feb. 14.
There will also be family development sessions  in various barangays from  Feb. 7 to 29; couples’ open house visit at Department of Social Welfare and Development-Cordillera Reception and Study Center for Children, Feb. 7 to 14; and pre-marriage counseling at the Health Services Office and CSWDO, Feb. 7 to 14.
The annual event is anchored on Ordinance 10, s. 2017 that declared Feb. 7 to 14 as Marriage Week in Baguio City to provide programs that will benefit the public to emphasize that a thriving marriage can lead to a productive family for a transformed society.
“Marriage promotes the common good by building families and nurturing children. It is recognized as the foundation of family life and that preservation and promotion of such institution is vital for the survival of a nation,” the ordinance stated.
The Marriage Week supports efforts to strengthen Filipino families by promoting the value of the marriage bond between couples.
CSWDO Assistant Head Edith Furigay said Marriage Week started in the United Kingdom in 1996 as an awareness campaign and celebration on the importance of a healthy marriage. It is observed in 26 countries and in Asia, only the Philippines is supporting the week-long affair. – Gaby Keith
