The House of Representatives approved on third reading bills that seek to establish two specialized high schools in the city.

House Bill (HB) 7316 sought to establish the Baguio City High School for the Arts while HB 8700 sought to establish the Baguio City Sports High School.

Rep. Mark Go, principal author of HB 7316, said by creating the specialized public high school for the arts, the city’s youth and even those from neighboring areas will have a place where their aptitude and skills in the arts can be honed with the most conducive environment, facilities and curriculum.

He said the establishment of the specialized public high school in the city that shall offer a sports-focused education to its learners will finitely contribute in enhancing the city’s identity as a haven of sports talents that continue to bring honor and pride not only to the city but also to the Cordillera and the country.

The proposed sports high school will be administered and supervised by the Department of Education in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission.

Go said the sports high school shall implement a general secondary education, as prescribed by the pertinent provisions of Republic Act 10533 for students with considerable potentials in sports.

He added the school curriculum shall have a significant emphasis on developing the athletic skills of the students through subjects about physical education and sports.

The said bills were already transmitted to the Senate and awaiting the appropriate recommendations from the concerned committees for plenary debates and amendments.

Go expressed hope the Senate will act on the proposals bills when Congress resumes sessions. – PIO release
