Hats off to Baguio Tourism Council Chair Gladys Vergara, “An Enchanting Baguio Christmas” creative director Ferdie Balanag, and Baguio Tourism Officer Alec Mapalo for the implementation of beautiful and exceptional activities.
Alec had implemented so many activities that were truly memorable and distinctive.
And now with Gladys at the helm of the BTC, Baguio is experiencing one of the best Christmas celebrations for the public to enjoy.
Sadly, health issues made me miss the opening of “The Baguio Christmas Fair” a component of “An Enchanting Baguio Christmas” on Nov. 24 with the concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra courtesy of the Cultural Center of the Philippines at the Rose Garden. Also, the performance of the world famous Bayanihan Dancers on Nov. 23.
I am thankful though that Facebook was flooded with photos and videos, some even aerial, thanks to technology.
The Rose Garden is back to its old name, a garden of beauty. With the many activities being celebrated there, it is surely creating a magic spell for everyone.
Maybe similar activities can be done too at the Sunshine Park? We don’t need additional or grandiose infrastructure there, just activities for people to enjoy.
What about the revival of folksinging? The place is so conducive for folksongs and L.A. walks.
And today, Dec. 1, there are so many activities to fill up your day, from morning to night.
It starts with a Children’s Mardi Gras. The activities of the late manong Nars Padilla are now being handled by his son, Fritz. We have the lantern parade of Saint Louis University, the lighting of Porta Vaga and the Baguio Christmas tree, Rose Garden’s lights and sound show, and fireworks display.
Last Nov. 28, SLU also lighted its giant Christmas tree.
Every year, the people of Baguio and an increasing number of visitors look forward to SLU’s Christmas lantern parade.
Students produce lanterns that are truly unique and beautiful. The parade gets better and better every year. So much creativity! I will use Oxford’s definition, “the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.”
Sayang, maybe, in future parades, they should have them on display at SLU for a day or week, for people to see and perhaps to buy. Alternative livelihood anyone?
What are the other events in store for December? When are the cantatas? Or the singing Christmas Tree? Will there be a bibingka or puto bumbong galore? Perhaps a festival of Christmas food and delicacies?
On Dec. 28, the Baguio General Hospital Advisory Board will have its “Share-a-Smile” project for indigent patients of the BGHMC.
