The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF)-North Luzon is strengthening the promotion of halal in the Cordillera.
NCMF-North Luzon Director, Atty. Raihanah Sarah Macarimpas, said halal does not only cover food because it is part of the lifestyle, practice, and expression of religion of the Muslim.
“It is very important to us kaya important program ito ng aming opisina,” she said.
With the increasing Muslim population and growing preference of non-Muslims of halal products, which are said to be healthier, the potential of the halal industry is growing.
Macarimpas said they are coordinating with other line agencies for the awareness campaign and showcasing of halal.
She said they are eyeing partnership with the Department of Tourism to pioneer Baguio City as the first Muslim-friendly City outside the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao; the Department of Agriculture for halal agriculture, and with the Department of Science and Technology for the establishment of halal slaughterhouse in the region.
“Ang pagkakaroon ng halal slaughterhouse ang isa sa mga gusto naming magawa dito sa Baguio City dahil alam naman natin na ang halal food ay mag-uumpisa sa processing at dapat from the farm to the market, the food is halal. From slaughtering pa lang ng mga livestock, dapat halal na,” Macarimpas said.
She said they had initial meetings with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for the conduct of trainings for halal preparations and food processing.
They also conducted seminars and training where Muslims are reminded on the importance of halal.
The NCMF is a government agency mandated to preserve and develop the culture, tradition, institutions, and well-being of Muslim Filipinos, in conformity with the country’s laws and in consonance with national unity and development. – Debbie Gasingan
