The facilities within the Benguet Sports Complex will be upgraded soon.
Benguet legislative caretaker, Rep. Eric Go Yap, said he would see to it that the province’s sports complex would be improved as the center of sports development during his second visit in the locality.
“Papagawan natin ng program of work para magkaroon ng bleacher at ng court. We will find a way na maghanap ng pondo this year. Kung wala, next year, pero iyan ay commitment ko sa mga taga-Benguet,” Yap said.
Yap of the Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support party-list, said after the multipurpose gym, he plans to help in making the oval track into a rubberized track.
He said he would help in asking for funds starting from private agencies with corporate social funds that are willing to fund the improvement of the sports complex.
The sports complex presently serves as a training area for local athletes but the lack of facilities still limits the athletes from fully using the area which is comprised of the oval track, oval field, lawn tennis court, and the multipurpose gymnasium with its construction still ongoing.
Earlier, Yap met with Benguet’s pride, Team Lakay, to assist them in their training needs.
He said he would talk with Gov. Melchor Diclas to discuss the possibility of providing an area to build a gym as a training area for Team Lakay.
He said his office would then look for funding to build the gym, which could also become a tourist attraction in the province. He said this will back the province’s world-class mixed martial athletes and would-be athletes to have an area where they could train for free. Team Lakay’s headquarters is presently located in a rented building in Pico, La Trinidad.
Yap said Team Lakay serves as an inspiration not only to Benguet youth, but also to the country’s youth when it comes to discipline and excellence in sports.
He recognized the potential Benguet has when it comes to excelling in various sports discipline. – Ofelia C. Empian
