Generosity is one of the best Filipino values. Filipinos share even if they have little. The late Anthony Bourdain, a world-renowned chef said that “Filipinos are probably the most giving people on the planet.”
Filipinos show generosity in different situations and occasions. During calamities, they give money, food, and clothes and render services for the victims. They also extend their help during wakes, weddings, feasts, and other special occasions.
In this modern world, although some Filipinos are becoming selfish, others still choose to live by the culture of generosity.
In the small community where I live, the spirit of sharing is still observed. When someone dies, each member of the community, even the poorest ones give donations and offer their services to help the grieving family. During weddings, feasts, and other community affairs, each one contributes whatever they can to make the event successful.
Schoolchildren also show generosity among themselves. They share their food, toys, and school supplies to their classmates.
In urban areas, some well-to-do individuals are becoming more sensitive to the needs of others. They now share their blessings with the less fortunate. They are becoming more active in charity works.
Our school was lucky to be visited by Rotary Club of Baguio Summer Capital on Nov. 20. School supplies, food, toothbrushes, toothpastes and used clothings were distributed to the pupils and teachers. Dental services were also provided for free.
Looking at the faces of the pupils glow as they receive the gifts was overwhelming. The people behind the gift-giving event surely felt overflowing gladness, too.
Sharing what we have to others brings joy in one’s heart. It gives a sense of fulfillment which cannot be obtained through other means.
Giving also draws us closer to God. God commands us to help others who are in need. As stated in Hebrew 13:16 “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
So start sharing your blessings with others and see the wonderful difference it can make in your life.
