With 14 athletes of Benguet proving their prowess in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, the provincial government has committed to improve its sports facilities, particularly its sports complex in Wangal, La Trinidad.
Gov. Melchor Diclas said there are various programs lined up for the improvement of the Benguet Sports Complex in 2020.
This includes the ongoing improvement of the multipurpose gymnasium, which is currently used for public and private events, starting with its bleachers and flooring.
Diclas added Sen. Lito Lapid has promised an amount for the gym’s improvement. They are also eyeing to make the oval tracks into a Tartan track to cater to more sports events.
One of the long-term plans is to develop a portion of the sports complex for the put-up of a swimming pool, which provincial athletes also need.
“Hopefully, by 2022, we would have finished the oval, swimming pool, and multipurpose gym,” Diclas said.
Provincial Sports Coordinator Dean Mark Monang said one of the requirements in hosting the annual Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet is having a rubberized track, for which P100 million is needed.
He said it would be up to the office of the governor and office of the congressman to work for the funding of the track. The provincial government welcomes sponsors for the project.
For the sports complex’s lighting system, Monang said they have acquired light fixtures from the Philippine Sports Commission but have not yet set it up.
Concrete fences were also put up around the area, especially those near the residential areas that surrounded the sports complex.
Monang said they are slowly developing the area to make it into a PSC-standard sports complex. – Ofelia C. Empian
