The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) clarified the news report regarding the appointment of Cultural Center of the Philippines president Arsenio “Nick” Lizaso as chair of the NCCA.
The article, published in website of ABS-CBN claims that Lizaso has been appointed to the post by President Rodrigo Duterte last Dec. 23, and Malacanang supposedly released a document pertaining to hi appointment, Dec. 27. The NCCA said these claims are misleading.
As stated in Section 9 (Composition) of Republic Act 7356, the post of NCCA chair is determined through election among the members of the Board of Commissioners, not through appointment.
“The Chairman of the Commission shall be elected by the members from among themselves.”
“We wish to inform the public that, as of writing, the NCCA Board of Commissioners has yet to conduct their elections. In a board meeting held last Dec. 16, the NCCA Board of Commissioners decided to hold the elections for chairmanship in January 2020, once the subcommission level elections are finished,” the NCCA said in a press statement.
The NCCA said incumbent chair National Artist Virgilio S. Almario shall hold the position until a new chairperson for the term 2020-2022 is elected. – Press release
